Overview

Core:
The core is the base upon which the strands lie. It is a vital component in the design and operation of a wire rope.
  • Fibre Core: Natural or Synthetic. Natural fibre cores are too liable to degrade and have therefore been replaced by polypropylene. It is used as a lubricant reservoir.
  • Plastic Compact Core (Trefileurope Patent): From experience it has been proved to have long-lasting stability.
  • Combined Core Or Steel Core: Due to shock loads, contact pressures & abrasion, the wires of a steel core break by cross-nicking. This is undetectable from outside and the consequence is a fat disintegration of the geometric structure until the rope breaks. The combined core of REINFORCED TUNAPLAST has been designed to obtain the advantages of a fibre core ("soft" support and grease reserve) and the theoretical advantage of a steel core (higher breaking load).

Protection against Corrosion:
In order to solve this problem for good GALFAN coating is applied, offering a threefold increased resistance to corrosion compared to zinc. Besides, as it is harder than zinc, the GALFAN coating gives a better resistance to friction and retards the development of martensite.

Lubrication:
Greasing must be carried out at regular intervals.

Resistance to Abrasion, and Shocks & Fatigue:
Flexibility with small wire diameter is needed to maximise the resistance to shocks. On the other hand, a stiff rope with large diameter is necessary against abrasion. TUNAPLAST, REINFORCED TUNAPLAST, & SUPER CORDON ROUGE, have been specially designed to combine fatigue and increase abrasion resistance.

Rigging:
A regular maintenance of all rigging components plays a major role in the life span of a rope. It is necessary to check the condition of all working components.

Sheaves:
Their diameter should ideally be 16 to 22 times the rope diameter. As fishing vessels are usually restricted for space, a minimum of 10 times the diameter can be accepted in most cases, that is to say a 220mm diameter sheave for a 22mm rope. If wear is detected, the sheave must be replaced or repaired by welding. In this case, care should be taken to ensure that the welding is correctly cleaned up in order to avoid wire damage. We draw attention to the fact that only one seized up rigging component can induce frictions and overheating that will lead to premature wear and failure of the rope.

Maintenance and Storage:
The rope must be lubricated, protected and stored in a dry place (in a Shed or under an Awning).

The 6 x 19 Seale construction is more adapted to fishing than the 6 x 19 N (1+6+12) construction; small diameter outer wires are sensitive to friction and inside crossed wires sensitive to pressure.

Very stable construction:
The imprints of the outer wires into the solid plastic core allow an excellent seating of the strands.
TRAWLPLAST is recommended in Pelagic fishing and on hard uneven grounds.

  • On a high density fibre core (6 x 26 WSR)
  • Flexible, easy to mark and splice
  • High breaking load
  • Very resistant to fatigue and abrasion

The combination of plastic and steel gives a new dimension to the performance of fishing wire ropes. TUNAPLAST is developed from NOTORPLAST, COMPACT CORE, and PLASTOLIFT patents.

TUNAPLAST has been designed to withstand all the stresses produced by purse seine fishing; high abrasion of the rings, weight of the seine and great fatigue due to the small curve radius of the wire rope.

REINFORCED TUNAPLAST

TUNAPLAST and REINFORCED TUNAPLAST's main advantage lies in the ability of their strands to collapse onto the plastic centre wire.
  • Accordingly the rope/sheave contact surface increases (1)
  • Inter wire contact (2) and strand pressure greatly decreases
  • The precise geometric design combined with equal distribution of contact pressure ensures an exceptionally long service life
